An Update On The Siemon Law Firm’s COVID-19 Response

The coronavirus has forced people across Georgia, the country and the world to adapt to a new normal. At The Siemon Law Firm, we are adjusting to how to respond to the threats of COVID-19 and operate in this new environment. We recognize that while the virus may have shut down many parts of normal life here in Georgia, family law matters are still ongoing and require attention. Read below for our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, what you can expect from us and how the courts have adapted.

The Siemon Law Firm Continues To Operate

Despite what you may have been told, the courts are not currently shut down. Georgia’s chief justice declared a statewide judicial emergency on March 14, 2020. This order forced courts to “suspend all but essential court functions.” While procedures continue to be modified, our attorneys can still file new cases and move those cases through to a resolution.

We are engaged in the following practices to continue our operations while keeping our attorneys, staff and clients safe:

  • Maintaining our paperless policy. The Siemon Law Firm was already a paperless firm before the coronavirus outbreak. We are able to fully operate and serve our clients via our digital systems.
  • Consulting with clients via phone or email. To follow social distancing guidelines, we are prepared to consult with you and handle your case by email and telephone.
  • Engaging in virtual meetings. Mediators, arbitrators, parent coordinators and more are often able to meet via videoconferencing. We advise on what to expect and when this is an option.
  • Social distancing in our workplaces. While we continue to work out of our offices, we are diligently practicing social distancing and have the capability to work remotely if necessary.

We recognize the essential nature of the services we provide. Family law matters cannot be placed on hold while other parts of life take over. We dedicate ourselves to resolving divorce and other family law issues outside of the courtroom when possible.

A Look Into The Georgia Courts System

The statewide judicial emergency will remain in effect for a 30-day period, expiring on April 13, 2020. While the courts may have postponed or rescheduled hearings, other functions of the court system are able to proceed in new ways. Courts will also remain open to prioritize legal issues where the liberty or safety of an individual is concerned, including for domestic abuse temporary protective orders and restraining orders.

Whether you are an existing client or considering your legal options during this time, we can advise on how your case may progress given the current climate. For detailed information on the emergency judicial orders, please visit the Judicial Council of Georgia’s website. While the statewide judicial emergency order supersedes local judiciary emergency orders, this website also contains links to any orders or addendums filed by individual courts and judicial circuits, including for Fulton, Cobb and Forsyth counties.
